Making a Background

I am preparing the background for a large art quilt.  Mistyfused fabric is cut into 2" squares.  I am cutting through at least 4 layers of fabric, using a Havel's Comfort Rotary Cutter.

Here is my color palette with my favorite fabrics - Hoffman Batiks

Here is the entire background of my art quilt measuring 36 wide by 48 high.  The squares were fused to wool blended felt, while it was hanging on the design wall.

Detail of the blues - oh so wonderful and intriguing

Detail of the greens - so cool and light

I am trying out different fabrics for their clothes - pinned on - take a digital picture to see how all of the colors work together.

  1. I love your work and find your blog a delightful riot of colour! I just wanted to ask a question about your technique. I see that you said you fuse the background squares to felt. Does that mean you don't piece them together? That is an interesting thought and one that I might try as I worry that the edges will fray on so I don't give it a go!

  2. Hi, Jamie - I am fascinated, too, by your process description. Thanks for sharing. Glad I found your blog. I will visit again, and hope to see photos of this project as it develops. Best wishes, sus

  3. The process is not pieced, but fused. The wrong side of the fabric is fused with fusible web - Mistyfuse. Then cut into squares. After getting the fabrics, just overlapped slightly, they are ironed into place. The next step will be free motion quilting the entire piece.
