Jamie Fingal Expands Her Curvelet Quilting Journey
By Contemporary Textiles Today
In February 2021, acclaimed quilt artist Jamie Fingal revisited a technique that had begun to reshape her visual vocabulary — curved piecing through the use of Curvelets. This time, Fingal stepped beyond the original sew-along launched in 2020 and embraced larger templates designed by BettyCrockerAss, pushing her curved quilting exploration into new territory.
From Small Curves to Big Ideas
Fingal first began working with Curvelets as part of a community-driven project on Instagram. These small templates allowed her to integrate elegant curves and dynamic movement into her quilt compositions. But in 2021, her creative curiosity led her to try larger-scale templates, which opened up new possibilities for design and complexity.
Her studio became a space for playful experimentation, as she stitched together arcs, swoops, and waves of color — patterns that echoed both the natural world and abstract design.
Continued Innovation in Quilting
As with all of Fingal’s work, the transition to larger templates didn’t mean abandoning her signature style. Bold color palettes, graphic shapes, and layers of texture remained central to her pieces. The introduction of these sweeping curves simply allowed for more motion and visual flow — an evolution that brought renewed energy to her quilting practice.
Her February 2021 post, rich with in-progress shots and close-ups of detailed stitching, documented this journey of growth and experimentation.
A Personal Practice, Shared Publicly
Fingal’s willingness to share both process and outcome offers fellow artists and quilters not only inspiration but permission — permission to try, to shift gears, and to follow curiosity wherever it leads. Whether it’s through small Curvelets or bold, sweeping arcs, her quilts continue to tell stories of innovation and joy.
